Instagram Rolls Out “Instants” to Mixed Reviews – How to Turn it Off

Instagram introduces Instants. It’s a new feature for all Instagram users. This feature was announced on 13th May 2026 by Instagram. This feature have ability to make people feel more connected. Now anyone can send any random photos to their close friends. This feature allows everyone to see what their friends are doing. All instants removed completely after 24 hours. People often treat Instagram as a social media platform where everything needs to be perfect. So this update is a big change.

What is Instants and How Does It Work?

Instants is simple. You take a photo and send it to your friends. This feature have its own camera. Just click it from that only. You can’t be able to edit the image before sending. Photos from the camera roll can not be uploaded as Instants`. Only text can be added, but not changed.

There are two options for sending Instant. One is close friends and the other is followers you follow back. You can select any option with whom you want to share. Once the other person opens the photo, it will disappear. Anyone can reply to it by reacting through Emojis or an Instant. They can’t make a “screenshot” of the photo or record the image.

The Instants camera is placed in the bottom right of the Instagram Inbox, in the form of a small photo stack. Your pictures are also stored in private mode on Instagram. Your shared Instants will appear in a private archive, which is accessible for up to 1 year. You can even convert them into a recap and post it to your Instagram Stories.

What’s the point of Instagram’s new feature?

Instagram is making an effort to return to its origins. It originally started as an app in which users could share their daily lives with friends. It was filled over the years with influencer content, ads, and highly edited photos. Instants is an attempt by Instagram to revive the casual, personal, and private photo sharing among true friends.

This feature is inspired by apps such as Snapchat and BeReal. All these apps are about the real and unfiltered moments. Instants is not a place for looking perfect. It’s about communicating what is going on or not.

This is also a larger trend of social media in 2026. The need for authentic content is increasingly becoming the norm. They are fed up with the overly edited photos. Instagram obviously wants to remain with that modification.

Not All Are Happy – How to Turn Off Instants

Many users have been clueless and not so happy about this new feature. Insta users are well known for their ability to select which content to post. Many people don’t want to share unedited images as they have been habitual of being perfect on Instagram.

There is a privacy concern with this. However, it’s not possible to take a screenshot or to screen record an Instants. But in case you send an Instants accidentally. You can remove it before the other person opens it.

A few customers resorted to social media for complaints. There were a few people who wrote that the feature is not safe. Many users are looking for methods on how to disable it.

• Go to your profile
• Tap the three line on top right corner
• Open settings and activity
• Go to content preferences
• Turn on hide instances in the Inbox
